Finding The “High” In Your Work

The secret to the success of those at the top of the power structure in business and government is their ability to access “high” mental and emotional states, such as passion and enthusiasm, and bring these to their work. The connection between passion and work is the hallmark of highly successful people. They emit a potent energy that comes from within which influences and inspires those around them.

In working with CEOs of brand name corporations, companies that produce products that are found in most of the homes in America, I learned a secret to their success: they are fueled by a genuine passion. The following is an example of how men and women selling financial plans to individuals were able to find the “high” that made them successful in their work. Taking several planners separately, I asked each to see an image in their mind of selling the same plan to their customer. Each person came up with something unique but, there was a common theme to all of them: imaging their personal feeling about the plan they were selling put them a high state of exuberance giving them the drive to move through obstacles and keep on going.

One woman realized she was not selling a product, but providing long-term security for people, which she loved to do! When she saw it that way, she was filled her with a sense or purpose for her work. Another man saw himself as selling a life-long relationship of trust with his clients. This gave him a deeply rewarding feeling. He felt empowered and a sense of sacred duty toward his clients who trusted him with their life savings. Yet another person saw it as their talent to manage couples conflicting financial needs and to resolve the m. Each of the financial planners tapped into a unique sensibility of their own that connected them emotionally to their work. They were able to sell more financial services because their prospective clients sensed the genuine passion they emitted. Experiencing the unique quality of, turn-on in what they did, gave the planners energy and drive to break sales records. They were not really selling a product, they were selling a very personal feeling that was within them. The product was the vehicle to express something greater within.

I have worked with sales people, writers, designers, and people in dozens of other occupations and have achieved the same results: truly successful people experience an emotional high relating to the product or service with which they work. 5. Feel the high feeling and let it get stronger.

6. Notice what gives you the most pleasure or energy?

7. Now, see yourself at work in a high state.

8. Let the pleasure, the high state get stronger.

9 . See yourself expressing this passion, this high at work.
